We are at a historic moment in U.S. History. Vice President Kamala Harris has been named the Democratic nominee for POTUS. The joy and celebration shared by many of us as Black women over this announcement was meteoric. Also, in the face of this historic milestone, many of us are also witnessing the inevitable wave of misogynoir seeking to steal our joy and hush our celebration. Yet, it is precisely in these moments that we must double down on our joy, solidarity, determination, and radical self-care.
First, let us take a moment to acknowledge the magnitude of this achievement. For centuries, Black women have been the backbone of social justice movements (and innovation and creativity in organizations in general), often laboring in the shadows, our contributions unattributed, overlooked, and undervalued. Vice President Harris’s nomination is a tribute to all Black women who have fought tirelessly for recognition, equality, and– not just a seat at the table– but the right to lead it.
As we navigate the challenges ahead, remember that our power is in our voice, collectivism, organizing, and vision. In every space, from the internet to our workplaces, we must stand together, uplift each other, and be vigilant against efforts to undermine or diminish our worth. Let us continue to create spaces where we can celebrate our joy, share our struggles, and support one another unapologetically. And when the deluge of misogynoir gets too loud, we must remind each other who we are. IYKYK
In a world that constantly demands our physical, emotional, and intellectual labor and brilliance, taking time for ourselves is an act of resistance and political warfare. Prioritize your wellbeing, both mental and physical. Surround yourself with people who affirm and celebrate your existence and value your contributions. Engage in activities that bring you joy, peace, and fulfillment. Whether it’s a quiet moment of reflection, a walk in nature, savoring a nourishing meal, or being in community with loved ones, please make self care and your well-being a non-negotiable part of your life– especially during this time.
In the words of Audre Lorde, “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.”
